Tips for Finding Jeans at the Thrift Store

Tips for Finding Jeans at the Thrift Store

Finding a good pair of jeans at the thrift store can be difficult, especially depending on the size and style you are needing. This is why I’m going to be sharing my tips with you, so you can fill your closet with the jeans of your dreams.

With my job and lifestyle, I go through jeans like nobody's business. So I’m always on the hunt for my next great pair whenever I visit my local Goodwill stores. My number one style that I’m always looking for is either a mid-rise or high-rise skinny jeans — they work best for my body shape and job.

Finding The Style of Jeans You Need

  • When you are looking through the jeans section, go to your general size and just look at the legs of the jeans. This will help you narrow down your search right away, for the perfect pair of jeans. I find that thrift stores can be filled with early 2000s bootleg jeans, so if you are wanting skinny jeans this will help you find them quickly.

Finding the Brand That Is Right for You

  • I’m not sure if you know this yet, but every brand of jeans will fit everyone differently. The best-fitting brand of jeans for your best friend, might not work for you. For example, J. Crew and Old Navy jeans don’t work for me — no matter the size or style, believe me, I’ve tried them. So your first time shopping for jeans at the thrift store, try on as many brands that you can. The more brands you try on over time, you will learn what works for YOU. My go-to brands for jeans currently are Express, American Eagle, and Universal Thread.

  • Once you know what brands work for you, you can scan through the jeans section and by just looking for your go-to brand labels. This is my go-to style of shopping nowadays, especially since dressing rooms aren’t open in Indiana during these crazy times. I know that, if I stick to the brands that I know work for me, I can typically grab jeans that I know WILL fit me when I get home and try them on — which is always a great feeling.

Familiarize Yourself With Jean Styles

  • Learn to recognize the different jean styles that are out there, and how they look on the rack. When you are at the thrift store, you typically won’t have mannequins modeling jeans as you would see in a clothing store. This will help save time and surprises when trying on jeans, and help you find your dream pair of jeans faster! Which honestly, is what we all want with our busy lifestyles. Learn the difference between skinny vs. straight leg, bootleg vs. wide leg, and mom jeans vs. boyfriend jeans. Also, take the time to learn what styles flatter your body shape best — the days where you feel like nothing fits, grabbing a well-fitting pair of jeans will help lift the spirits!

Armed with these tips, I want you to walk confidently into your local thrift store and find that pair of jeans you have been dreaming about!
