Makeup 101 | Learning the Makeup Basics
What are your goals with your makeup? What do you want to focus on? Think about these questions when picking out makeup for your needs and goals.
Makeup Steps
Wash your face — Before you apply any makeup to your face, make sure that you take the time to take care of your skin first. Healthy skin equals needing less makeup in the long run.
Moisturizer — After washing your face, you will need to put moisture back into your skin. So find a good moisturizer that fits your skin needs, and sits well underneath your makeup.
Primer — You don’t need to wear a primer, sometimes I personally forget to wear one. But sometimes it can be nice to wear a primer depending on your skin needs: oily skin [wear a mattifying primer], adding some glow to your skin, pore minimizing, dull skin, etc…. My favorite primers are mostly from the brand: BECCA Cosmetics, they are the ones I always reach for and actually use up so I highly recommend theirs.
Foundation / Tinted Moisturizer — I’m definitely a sheer-to-medium foundation kinda gal. I don’t need a ton of coverage a majority of the time, I just like wearing and playing around with makeup. During the summer months I’m definitely wearing a tinted moisturizer with a good SPF underneath kinda girl, otherwise my face will burn from too much sun exposure.
Concealer — I love a good concealer! I’m a fan of higher-end concealers, mostly because I don’t breakout as often with more expensive products. My current favorite is the Hourglass vanish concealer, it is great at brightening the under-eye area [which is the main reason I wear concealer]. You can also use concealer to cover blemishes, but I mostly just go without makeup those days and just do spot treatments. Then again, that is just me personally.
Powder — I love using either a translucent powder, or a powder foundation to set my t-zone and under-eye area. I will use either a fluffy powder brush, or a damp beauty sponge to apply the powder.
Bronzer — Bronzer is great at adding back in natural shadows and definition to your face, it can also be use to make you look more sun kissed if applied where the sun would naturally hit you. I’ve become a big fan of bronzer within the past two years.
Blush — After applying bronzer, you will probably want to add some color back into your cheeks with some blush. During the warmer months I’ve been loving a good cream blush, and then when it cools off I enjoy going back to my powder blushes.
Highlighter — Where bronzer is great at making things appear slimmer, highlighter brings things forward. You can apply this to the tops of your cheekbones, your brow bone, and your cupids bow if you so desire.
Brows — Brows frame the face, so I personally feel like if you are going to spend time doing your makeup, you should at least attempt to do something to your brows if you aren't blessed with amazing brows. Take the time to explore different brow products to find the one that works for you. Personally, I’m a fan of the ABH brow wiz, and then setting them with their clear brow gel.
Eyes — When you are just starting out, I feel like keeping it simple is best. Take some of your bronzer and sweep it through your crease, to add some simple definition to your eyes. Throw on some mascara, and if you so desire apply some eyeliner.
